The Memphis Grizzlies are set to add frontcourt depth by signing center Charles Bassey under a hardship exception, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.

Charania reported on Sunday that Memphis plans to finalize the move due to multiple long-term injuries across its roster. Ty Jerome, Scotty Pippen Jr., Brandon Clarke, and Zach Edey are all sidelined for extended periods, making the team eligible for a 10-day hardship signing.

Bassey, 23, last played for the San Antonio Spurs, where he appeared in 36 games during the 2024–25 season. The big man averaged 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in just over 10 minutes per contest, showcasing his efficiency around the rim and defensive presence in limited minutes.

Originally selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the 2021 NBA Draft, Bassey spent his rookie season in Philadelphia before moving to San Antonio. Across four professional seasons, he has averaged 4.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and nearly one block per game, while shooting 63.1 percent from the field.

On September 10, Bassey signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Atlanta Hawks but was waived prior to the regular season on October 18. His brief stint in Atlanta provided him a training camp opportunity but no guaranteed roster spot.

Adding Bassey offers Memphis a physical rebounder and rim protector capable of contributing immediate minutes off the bench. His 6-foot-11 frame and strong second-jump ability fit the team’s need for interior defense and energy in the paint.
