Former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman announced on Wednesday that his wife Bartina has died at the age of 65 following a battle with breast cancer.
Sharing a black-and-white photograph of himself alongside his wife of 41 years, Koeman wrote on social media: “With deep sorrow, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my wonderful wife, our dearest mom and grandma,”
Koeman managed the Dutch national team at this year’s World Cup. Speaking in June ahead of their opening fixture, he expressed hope that Bartina would be able to temporarily halt weekly treatment for recurring breast cancer and travel to the United States should the team reach the final.
The former Barcelona defender subsequently stepped down from his position with the national team following their round-of-32 exit against Morocco, citing his wife’s health as part of the reason for his departure.
“The past years have made me realize again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes,” Koeman wrote on his Instagram account on June 30.
“My wife Bartina has supported and encouraged me every day to finish my work as a national coach despite her own illness process. That is a testimony to incredible strength.”
Koeman completed two separate spells managing the Netherlands, serving as Barcelona coach during the 2020-21 season in between. He has also managed Everton and Southampton in the Premier League.
Regarded as one of the finest defenders of his era, Koeman played a central role in the Netherlands’ European Championship victory in 1988, while winning European Cup titles with both PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona.
He scored the decisive goal at Wembley Stadium in 1992 as Barcelona secured their first European Cup by beating Sampdoria 1-0 after extra time in the final.
Paying tribute on social media, the Spanish club stated: “FC Barcelona and its supporters send their deepest condolences and affection to Ronald Koeman and his family for the passing of his wife, Bartina Koeman,” adding, “May she rest in peace.”
