Former NBA guard Eddie Johnson expressed concerns Friday over Memphis Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo’s approach, suggesting it may not translate well to the league. Johnson tweeted that Iisalo’s “robotic coaching” and heavy use of “hockey style substitutions” could see him returning to FIBA.

Johnson emphasized the importance of strong relationships with star players in the NBA, noting that coaches must listen to players’ physical and mental feedback. “Let the player tell you if he is tired,” he wrote, highlighting a potential disconnect with Iisalo’s methods.

The comments followed a report from Brett Siegel detailing tension between Iisalo and star guard Ja Morant. Sources indicated that Morant was challenged to elevate his energy and leadership during a halftime team session, but the constant substitutions reportedly impacted him mentally.

Memphis’ early-season struggles appear tied to these internal issues. Morant, suspended for a game after a locker room confrontation, scored just eight points on 3-of-14 shooting in a loss to the Lakers, raising concerns about chemistry under Iisalo.

The Grizzlies are balancing discipline with system adjustments. Tim MacMahon reported that Memphis may be emphasizing Jaren Jackson Jr. in future planning, while Morant’s long-term status with the team remains uncertain.

Despite the friction, Morant’s season averages remain strong, with 20.1 points and 7.9 assists per game, though his efficiency and team synergy are under scrutiny. League insiders suggest a potential trade would face obstacles due to positional depth and fit concerns.

Johnson’s comments reflect broader questions about adapting European coaching styles to the NBA. While Iisalo has seen success internationally, his methods may clash with the expectations of star-driven rosters in the league.

The Grizzlies are 4–6 through the first ten games of the 2025-26 season, navigating both team performance and locker room dynamics. How the team manages the Iisalo-Morant relationship will be pivotal for their competitiveness moving forward.
