Draymond Green highlighted Jimmy Butler’s leadership after the Golden State Warriors’ 119–109 season-opening win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night. Green praised Butler for his consistency, communication, and ability to elevate teammates throughout the game.
Butler scored 31 points and distributed key assists, helping Golden State maintain control after a dominant third-quarter run. Green noted that Butler’s offensive patience and defensive effort made it difficult for Luka Doncic, who finished with 43 points, to dominate without double-teams.
“He’s been a great leader since the day he showed up,” Green said. “He encourages teammates, tells guys what he sees, and makes corrections. He’s a constant reminder not to sulk or drop your shoulders.”
Green also highlighted Butler’s ability to deliver under pressure. “When you ask for opportunity, you must deliver,” he said. “Jimmy’s vocal, he puts his neck on the line, and he delivered all night.”
Jonathan Kuminga also received praise from Green for his contributions. Green emphasized Kuminga’s growth and game-winning plays, saying, “He’s been very vocal about his opportunity, and he delivered. That adds a totally different dimension for us.”
Despite Doncic’s 43-point performance, Green stressed that the Warriors’ defense limited the Lakers’ options without committing multiple players to double-team. He described the approach as wearing Doncic down over 48 minutes rather than trying to stop him completely.
Green addressed perceptions of potential friction between himself and Butler, saying mutual respect has prevented clashes. “I have the utmost respect for ultimate competitors and alphas. He’s an alpha,” Green said. “There was a misconception that two alphas would clash, but that hasn’t been the case. He’s the ultimate team guy.”
The Warriors’ victory was bolstered by Stephen Curry’s 23 points and Buddy Hield’s 17 off the bench. Green added eight points and seven assists, including a late three-pointer that ended the Lakers’ last comeback attempt.
Reflecting on the win, Green downplayed its significance in the larger season context. “It’s good to get off to a good start, but it doesn’t really mean much. We’ve got a lot to improve upon,” he said, citing missed opportunities in transition and second-quarter struggles.
Golden State will host the Denver Nuggets in their next game, while the Lakers, without LeBron James due to sciatica, are set to face the Minnesota Timberwolves. Green expressed respect for James’ situation and hopes for a quick recovery.
