A recently unveiled development initiative for the Detroit riverfront outlines plans for constructing a state-of-the-art multi-sports complex, a project designed to bolster the city’s efforts to secure a WNBA expansion team, according to JC Reindl of the Detroit Free Press.

Spearheaded by Pistons owner Tom Gores alongside a group of local investors, the proposed facility would serve as the franchise’s official training center and administrative headquarters, further solidifying Detroit’s commitment to professional women’s basketball.

The planned complex is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing Detroit’s appeal as a viable market for the WNBA, providing the necessary infrastructure to support a potential team.

The Detroit Pistons and their G League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise, currently host their home games in the city’s downtown area.

Speculation regarding Detroit’s bid for a WNBA franchise first emerged in late January, when reports indicated that the city was among those actively seeking expansion opportunities within the league.
