When the senior German national team touched down in Frankfurt on Monday, just hours after clinching gold at EuroBasket 2025, Dennis Schroder quickly became the center of attention.
The spotlight shone not only on the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, but also on Schroder, who celebrated his birthday on the same day.
Fans, estimated at around 1,000 by local authorities, greeted the team with MVP chants and a rendition of “Happy Birthday,” making for a memorable celebration.
Earlier in the event, organizers had set the mood with classics ranging from Europe’s The Final Countdown to Queen’s We Are the Champions.
“We don’t take it for granted,” the 32-year-old Braunschweig native told the crowd. “It has been a successful four years. In 2022, we started with bronze in EuroBasket, in 2023 we won gold in the FIBA World Cup, and now gold in EuroBasket.”
Schroder’s performance across the tournament was remarkable. Over eight games, spanning pool play in Tampere and the knockout rounds in Riga, the team captain – also MVP of the FIBA World Cup 2023 – averaged 20.3 points, 7.2 assists, 3.4 rebounds, 0.8 steals, and 0.1 blocks per contest.
His next challenge will be with the Sacramento Kings in the 2025-26 NBA Regular Season, marking his 13th season in the league.
While the players and remaining coaching staff celebrated the EuroBasket victory with fans in Germany, head coach Alex Mumbru returned directly to Spain.
Having sat out the preliminary round due to health concerns and delegated head-coaching duties to Alan Ibrahimagic, the 46-year-old tactician chose to travel home to focus on his recent medical issues.
