Russell Westbrook’s standout performance and increased playing time on Saturday came with a noticeable shift in the Nuggets’ rotation – one that significantly affected Michael Porter Jr.’s role.
Porter, known for his scoring ability, was limited to just three points in over 26 minutes of action and did not return to the game after being subbed out early in the fourth quarter, according to Luca Evans of The Denver Post.
Interim coach David Adelman addressed the decision postgame, making it clear that his approach to closing lineups is based strictly on performance in the moment, rather than status or reputation.
“His closing lineup will always consist of the five ‘playing the best at that time,’” Evans noted, which naturally raises questions about Porter’s place in the rotation moving forward.
Adelman emphasized that Porter’s playing time is earned like anyone else’s and tied directly to effort and production.
“I’m going to say it again, like I’ve said last week – if Mike comes out, and he plays, and he’s engaged defensively, he’s knocking down shots – Michael will be out there,” Adelman told reporters. “Just like everybody else in that locker room.”
In other words, while Porter’s offensive potential remains undeniable, his ability to stay on the floor, especially in critical stretches, depends on more than scoring.
