Washington Wizards sharpshooter Corey Kispert has been diagnosed with a fracture to the tip of his right thumb, the team announced on Wednesday.

According to the Wizards, Kispert will be treated “conservatively,” and the team will provide updates on his recovery timeline as needed.

Josh Robbins of The Athletic reports that surgery won’t be necessary to address the fracture. Robbins adds that injuries of this type generally require approximately three weeks of recovery time.

Kispert suffered the injury during the third quarter of Washington’s 132–113 victory over Atlanta on Tuesday.

The play appeared to occur when Hawks guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker swiped at the ball as Kispert was attempting to pass to Khris Middleton.

Kispert reacted immediately by shaking his right hand in discomfort (video link via NBA.com) and checked out of the game soon afterward.

After coming off the bench in all 61 of his appearances last season, Kispert has started two of Washington’s 17 games this year. However, his minutes have dipped to a career-low 19.9 per contest.

Despite the reduced role, the 26-year-old remains efficient, averaging 8.9 points per game while shooting 50.5% from the field and 40.3% from three-point range.

With Kispert sidelined – and rookie Tre Johnson also out due to a left hip flexor strain – Josh Robbins tweets that third-year wing Cam Whitmore and rookie Will Riley are likely candidates to see expanded minutes on the wing.
