Cooper Flagg led the Dallas Mavericks to end their losing streak with a 138-133 overtime win against the Portland Trail Blazers at home on Sunday.
The highly prized rookie dropped 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two blocks, and one steal, along with massive help from PJ Washington, who also contributed 21 points.
Washington discussed how Flagg has been developing so far this early in the season, as he has learned from every game from the veterans and coaches.
“I think it’s developing really well, just trying to read how guys are playing him and I’m trying to give him an overlook of everybody who’s guarding him, telling him their strengths, their weaknesses, and which way to force them…Obviously has a long way to go but he’s going to be phenomenal player in this league…Just trying to be that mentor for him and just give him all the information I know,” Washington said.
The second half of the clash was fantastic for Flagg, as he increased his level of aggressiveness to a new level that helped them seal the win.
Meanwhile, head coach Jason Kidd also noted that the super rookie took charge in the second half, where he became more patient with scoring as he has been learning how to compete in the league in their 14 games.
“Just aggressive and I think in the open court, he thrives in the open court and I think he got in the open court a little more there in the second half…His patience is, I think one of his strong points. He just doesn’t force things. As much as people would like him to shoot, even bad shots, he just plays the game the right way,” the head coach said.
In early-season stats, Flagg is consistently averaging 15.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists, while shooting 43.6% from the field.
