Italian football club Como has handed forward Roberta Picchi a contract extension as a sign of “continued commitment” following her breast cancer diagnosis.
The diagnosis arrived shortly after she helped Como secure promotion to the top tier of Italian women’s football for the first time, and just weeks ahead of their opening women’s Serie A fixture.
“Roberta will now begin her treatment, supported throughout by the club’s medical team, who will work closely with the specialists responsible for her care,” Como said in a statement on Monday.
“Everyone at Como 1907 is alongside Roberta and will give her and her family all the support they need during the months ahead. As part of that continued commitment, the club has also renewed Roberta’s contract until the end of the 2027/28 season.”
Como added: “At this time, we ask that Roberta’s privacy is respected as she focuses on her treatment and recovery.”
Picchi also posted her own statement on social media.
The 34-year-old’s statement read: “Nothing should ever be taken for granted, and I feel fortunate. It’s time to play my match, but I’ll be back even more determined.”
Como’s first match back in Serie A will be against AC Milan on 26 September.
Como’s men’s team has also flourished in recent times under manager Cesc Fabregas. The club returned to Serie A for the first time in 21 years in 2024 and earned a 10th-place finish in their first season back in the top flight.
With former Arsenal and Chelsea star Fabregas on the touchline, Como pushed on again last season to finish fourth and secure qualification for the Champions League.
They are due to play their first Champions League match on Thursday when they host Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.
Como have also started this season strongly, picking up seven points from their opening three Serie A games to sit fourth in the table.
After being held to a draw by Udinese in their opening game, Como have bounced back to win their next two fixtures against Napoli and Genoa.
After playing Leipzig on Thursday, they will be back in league action against Parma next Monday.
