Chauncey Billups, who is being placed on immediate leave from the Portland Trail Blazers, plans to fight the charges brought against him by the FBI, his attorney Chris Heywood said in a statement to ESPN.

Heywood defended former NBA Finals MVP, emphasizing that the former All-Star “is a man of integrity” who “would not cheat and defraud others.”

The attorney dismissed the federal accusations as unfounded, stating that Billups would never risk his “hall-of-fame legacy, his reputation, and his freedom” for “a card game.”

The statement also underscored that Billups has never engaged in gambling on basketball or shared insider information, noting that such actions would betray “the game he has devoted his entire life to.”

“Chauncey Billups has never backed down,” Heywood added. “He will fight these allegations with the same tenacity that marked his 28-year career. We look forward to our day in court.”
