The Boston Celtics are actively exploring a trade for Anfernee Simons, sources confirmed to The Athletic. Jay King reported Tuesday, February 3, that the team could convert Simons’ $27.7 million expiring contract into draft picks or a frontcourt player.
Simons, 26, was acquired in a July 7, 2025 trade with Portland that sent Jrue Holiday to the Trail Blazers. In 49 games this season, he is averaging 14.2 points, 2.4 assists, and 2.4 rebounds in 24.5 minutes per contest.
Despite his strong fit with the team, Simons’ role could shrink if Jayson Tatum returns from a torn Achilles this season. In that scenario, Boston would have reduced need for Simons’ scoring off the bench.
Boston currently sits third in the Eastern Conference at 31-18, with Jaylen Brown leading the team at 29.4 points per game and Derrick White contributing 17.2. Simons’ scoring remains valuable, but the team is seeking more frontcourt balance.
The Celtics are reportedly looking for a big man in exchange for Simons while keeping draft picks in play. This strategy reflects a push to strengthen the roster for a deep playoff run while maintaining financial flexibility.
Simons’ expiring contract makes him an attractive target for contenders seeking short-term scoring without long-term salary commitments. His 39.5% three-point shooting adds floor spacing, which is crucial for playoff rotations.
Boston’s salary cap sits at $206.6 million against a $154.6 million cap, with a luxury tax of $39.4 million. The team operates as a taxpayer, limiting roster flexibility without trades or other adjustments.
The Celtics’ backcourt depth, including White and Payton Pritchard at 16.8 points per game, allows them to consider moving Simons without creating significant gaps.
