Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan lauded forward Matas Buzelis for his work ethic and determination during a press briefing this week. Donovan highlighted Buzelis’ ability to respond positively when challenged, calling it a key factor in his growth.
“You try to get him prepared for what’s ready to come,” Donovan said, via Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “I think the guys that make the most growth and development are the guys that are really driven and motivated. I think Matas displayed that last year.”
Buzelis, 21, appeared in 80 games for Chicago last season, starting 31, and averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assist over 18.9 minutes per contest. Donovan noted that the young forward’s mindset sets him apart from other talented players who require constant motivation from coaches.
“He leaned into that and wanted that,” Donovan added. “He’s very driven and very motivated. That’s a great start. I’ve seen a lot of guys that are really talented that you’re trying to wind up all the time to get them going. That’s difficult because that’s got to come from within.”
Buzelis has carried that energy into the 2025–26 season opener, posting 21 points, six rebounds, and three steals in a 115–111 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.
He has shown consistent scoring and defensive effort throughout the preseason, with multiple games above 19 points, including a 20-point effort against Denver on October 15.
