Luke Littler will look to deny 20 non-tour-card-holding darts players from winning over half-a-million pounds when Beat Luke Littler airs on Netflix on Friday evening.
The streaming giant are pitting a group of 24 casted players (who will be whittled down to 20 during the show) against the 19-year-old reigning world champion, who simply need to beat Littler in a single leg of darts to triumph.
“I’ll be wanting to beat everyone who comes up,” Littler said, vowing not to go easy on his opponents with so much money on the line. “Maybe the first few legs could be a bit nervy, but once I get going then I don’t think anyone will stop me.”
Here’s everything you need to know.
How does Beat Luke Littler work?
The rules of the competition are simple: if any one of the contestants wins a leg of darts against Littler, they will take home the prize money of £501,000.
Littler will have to win 20 successive legs in order to survive, with the game ending if any of the challengers check out before him. One competitor, 15-year-old current world youth champion Mitchell Lawrie, has suggested in interviews that the amateur player and Littler will ‘bull-up’ (throw one dart each and closest to the bullseye wins) to decide who throws first in each leg.
“If I lose one game then I’m done – that’s the only difference,” Littler said. “However, if I start off well then it’s going to be very hard for my opponents to get into the game.
“There won’t be too much change in how I prepare. I’ll just do what I do normally – practice, have a little break and then practice again.”
How can I watch it?
Beat Luke Littler will be streamed live on Netflix at 7pm GMT on Friday 30 October.
Gary Lineker will host the event with Richard Osman taking on an expert analyst role, while comedian Lee Mack,YouTuber Angry Ginge and ex-pro Laura Turner are also involved.
How were contestants selected?
Thousands of wannabes travelled from far and wide to enter the audition process, a turnout which was whittled down to just 24 after initial tryouts in Manchester and London.
Applicants were first told to check out from 501 in 24 darts or fewer. Those who did then had to impress in an interview with the show’s producers who were after entertainment value.
The final stage of the audition saw applicants face a PDC judging panel consisting of 16-time world champion Phil Taylor, PDC chief Barry Hearn and Sky Sports presenter LAura Turner. Here, they were assessed on their darting ability to determine which players could realistically have a chance of beating Littler and claiming the prize money.
After a process which included auditions from an Australian jockey and a pair of teenage brothers from Essex, the identities of the 24 players were confirmed by Netflix on 22 October, ranging from ages 14 to 57, with jobs including bin man, restaurant manager at Nando’s, pharmacist and civil servant.
Though having been initially advertised as a competition for “amateurs”, darts fans admitted discontent at recognising professionals in the line-up, such as Fallon Sherrock – the “Queen of the Palace” who became the first woman to win at the Darts World Championship in 2019. Netflix confirmed that their criteria for ‘amateur’ was simply not to hold a PDC tour card.
