Manchester United’s winless run stretched to a fifth game after falling to a 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, as Michael Carrick’s side conceded inside the opening 60 seconds and finished with 10 men as Leny Yoro was sent off.
The visitors made the worst possible start in Madrid as a simple ball behind the much-changed United back-line led Alex Baena to square to Pablo Barrios for a simple finish, despite Heaven’s attempt to clear.
In fairness, United responded well but were guilty of missing chances. Bryan Mbeumo spurned two opportunities in the first half before Bruno Fernandes volleyed wide from in front of goal and then hit the crossbar in the second half.
Yoro’s red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity, awarded following a VAR review after the young centre-back pulled down Jonathan David, ended the match as a contest and Ademola Lookman turned in a rebound to double Atletico’s lead.
After a 1-1 draw against 10-man Tottenham this weekend, Carrick will face mounting pressure as he takes his side to Elland Road on Sunday for a must-win clash at rivals Leeds United.

Arsenal produce second-half blitz to sink Lille and continue perfect Champions League start
Bukayo Saka came off the bench to help turn a frustrating evening into a rout as Arsenal beat Lille 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
The substitute scored the third of three Arsenal goals in a seven-minute burst after the hour mark, with Jurrien Timber and Eberechi Eze also finding the net.
More from Young
Ashley Young added: “He’s just come off the pitch, and emotions are running high. I get and understand that, but we know the recruitment needs to work, it has to be better but it takes time and do it.
“The players know that themselves and need to take it among themselves that they are the players in this squad and they are the ones on this pitch and go and produce. There won’t be any changes now until you get to January.”

Young reacts to Martinez comments
Here are the thoughts from former Man Utd star Ashley Young.
Of Lisandro Martinez, he said: “We spoke before the game on how the club needs to invest more, but when they invested in midfield they are not going to be able to go [and buy more]. What does [Martinez] want, a whole new team?
“They are not going to do that. They need to start in different positions. They could of brought in defence, they could of brought in front but they didn’t.”
‘We expect more from the top’: Lisandro Martinez scorches Man United leadership in astonishing interview
Paul Robinson on Martinez’s comments
The former England goalkeeper told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I question his timing, the noise around Manchester United at the moment, positivity needs to come out of the dressing room.
“But on the flip side of that I actually quite like it – a player being honest, every Manchester United fan across the country doesn’t need their players coming out saying ‘we’re doing ok, the squad’s strong enough’.
“Everyone can see they didn’t recruit well enough and they need more players and the squad’s not strong enough.”
Manchester United’s latest loss proves time is running out for Michael Carrick
A red card for Leny Yoro and a Pablo Barrios goal within 47 seconds condemned United to a loss in Madrid.
More from Rooney on Martinez
Rooney continued: “The fans want to hear the players speak, they want to hear the players care so you can clearly see that he cares and he wants the club to invest more money in more players, and to do that he’s probably one of the players who’ll be out the door if I’m being honest.
“His performances haven’t been good enough, but I think in some ways he’s right in terms of the club needing to invest more at the top end of the pitch and the defence, but I think it looks like it was a bit of an agenda and he wanted to say that because it doesn’t reflect the performance I thought the performance was better.”

Martinez has ‘gone a bit too far’ claims Rooney
Reaction is still comign through from that bombshell interview Lisandro Martinez gave.
Wayne Rooney believes the defender ‘went too far’.
He said: “I disagree [with Martinez’s comments]. I thought that the performance was okay. I thought it was better, so there were some positive signs.
“It’s a difficult one because I always used to feel that I was outspoken as a player and you want to have your opinion.
“I think he’s maybe gone a bit too far, and that should have stayed internal.”
United’s winless streak
Michael Carrick’s Manchester United are now five matches without a win and face a testing game against Leeds at the weekend.
That Premier League encounter is crucial for United’s season and they need to turn around their form or else changes will be made.
Carrick on Martinez’s comments
He said: “I haven’t seen it.
“After a game like this you come here to try and get something from the game and you are disappointed and can be emotional. I have not seen it so I don’t think it is the right time.
“We all care and show that in different ways but now is the time to be together and work through.”
