SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — From neighborhood playgrounds to sold-out arenas, basketball greatness has never belonged to just one stage. The American Basketball Hall of Fame is bringing that story into the spotlight with the announcement of 35 nominees for its Class of 2027, headlined by Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Charles Barkley and Sonny Vaccaro.
The nominees represent players, coaches, a broadcaster, a contributor and a historic basketball entertainment team—recognizing the many ways individuals and organizations have shaped the game, inspired fans and created opportunities for generations of athletes.
The final induction class will be unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday, December 2, 2026, in Southfield, Michigan.
Those selected will be honored Sunday, April 4, 2027, at the Southfield Pavilion in Southfield, Michigan, in Metro Detroit, during NCAA college basketball Final Four weekend.
The 2027 nominee slate brings together celebrated champions and influential figures whose contributions deserve renewed attention. It connects professional and collegiate basketball with the women’s game, playground culture, broadcasting and the traveling teams that brought basketball entertainment to communities across the country.
At the forefront is Magic Johnson, whose Michigan roots, championship legacy and extraordinary court vision make his nomination especially meaningful for a celebration in Metro Detroit.
Joining him is Charles Barkley, whose powerful play, competitive spirit and enduring presence in basketball have made him one of the sport’s most recognizable personalities.
Sonny Vaccaro’s nomination recognizes a different kind of influence: a career associated with sports marketing, grassroots basketball and advocacy for athletes. His inclusion underscores the importance of honoring those who helped shape opportunities beyond the court.
