Spencer Dinwiddie described the dramatic change in treatment an NBA player can experience when temporarily sent to the G League.
A player sitting near the end of an NBA bench may suddenly become the biggest name on his G League team. According to Dinwiddie, that difference extends beyond basketball and can even be noticeable in accommodations.
“When you’re on assignment in the G League, I might as well be LeBron when I go down there because they’re going to give me the five-star hotel. They’re going to put them in a Holiday Inn and they’re going to put me in the Four Seasons.”
The difference also carries onto the court. Instead of receiving limited opportunities like an end-of-the-bench NBA player, the assigned player can immediately become the centerpiece of the G League offense.
“You go from being the 15th man to LeBron in the G League and they run all the plays for you. They got to sit there and watch it. So there’s this weird little friction. You go down there, but you’re like, ‘All right, whatever. I’m only going to be down here two, three games.’ And you bounce.”
