The Denver Nuggets have emerged as a team to watch in pursuit of Cam Whitmore, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line. The 22-year-old forward recently became a free agent after being waived by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Whitmore was traded to Cleveland on August 21 as part of the five-team deal that sent Peyton Watson from Denver to the Cavaliers. Cleveland subsequently waived Whitmore, leaving the former first-round pick available to sign with another team.
Whitmore spent his first two NBA seasons with the Houston Rockets before joining the Washington Wizards during the 2025-26 season. Across 119 career games, he has averaged 10.5 points and 3.3 rebounds in 17.3 minutes per game while shooting 45.0% from the field and 34.9% from three-point range.
His most productive season came as a rookie in Houston. Whitmore averaged 12.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 47 games in 2023-24 while shooting 45.4% from the field and 35.9% from three-point range. He followed that with 9.4 points and 3.0 rebounds in 51 games during the 2024-25 season.
Whitmore appeared in only 21 games for Washington last season, averaging 9.2 points and 2.8 rebounds in 16.9 minutes. He shot 45.6% overall but connected on just 28.6% of his three-point attempts.
For Denver, the potential addition would come after an offseason in which the Nuggets prioritized financial flexibility while reshaping their wing rotation. The team traded Watson to Cleveland in the five-team sign-and-trade, receiving Cleveland’s unprotected 2031 first-round pick and Sacramento’s 2032 second-round pick rather than a player in return.
Watson had averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 41.1% from three in 54 games for Denver in 2025-26. His departure leaves the Nuggets with a need for additional young wing talent alongside their veteran core.
Denver finished 54-28 last season but was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray remain the foundation of the team, while Aaron Gordon, Cameron Johnson and Christian Braun are also under contract.
Whitmore would give Denver another young scoring option with three years of NBA experience and a career 34.9% three-point percentage. Stein’s report indicates the Nuggets are among the teams monitoring the former No. 20 overall pick as he looks for his next opportunity.
