The 2016 NBA postseason is full of comeback stories, even on the championship stage.
Before the Golden State Warriors became known for blowing a 3-1 lead against the Cleveland Cavaliers, they first completed a comeback in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Speaking with Dion Waiters, who was a role player for the Thunder in 2016, expressed his regrets after falling short and thinks they can beat the Cavaliers the other way around.
“We was in the WCF up 3-1 against GS. Tricked it off bro. We’re supposed to went to the Finals against Cleveland. I feel like we would’ve beat Cleveland. Kev [Durant] left went to GS,” Waiters said, via Real Talk With MJ.
The former Thunder guard also tried to cooperate for another postseason run in the next year, but Kevin Durant is off the conversation as he plans to join the Warriors.
“Before that [KD] text me and Serge [Ibaka] like how y’all think about bringing this thing back for 1 more year?. We’re texting in the group message a couple of times and I ain’t hear back from [KD] about it. Russ hit me up like you see this s***? This s*** crazy. That’s when he called me,” he added.
In summer 2016, there was a lot of frustration within Golden State’s organization, which then led to the pursuit of an MVP-caliber player.
Durant officially joined them and played three seasons, winning two championships and two Finals MVPs.
On the other hand, Waiters and the entire Oklahoma City hoped for another campaign after being one win away from the championship stage.
