Bob Iger and Josh Kushner have not decided what changes they will make after agreeing to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion, but Chris Paul is already being mentioned as a possible addition.
“It’s just premature to speculate at all about what we plan to do,” Iger told the California Post. “Because frankly, we haven’t made any plans yet.”
According to ESPN, people around the NBA believe the recently retired Paul could potentially have a role in the Lakers’ front office if changes are made. Paul and Iger developed a strong relationship during Paul’s years with the Clippers and have remained close.
There is currently no indication that Paul wants the position or that the Lakers have formally pursued him.
Paul nearly joined the Lakers as a player in 2011 before the proposed trade was blocked. He instead spent six seasons with the Clippers, making a potential Lakers role an interesting turn in his career.
One Eastern Conference executive suggested Paul could begin as a consultant.
“Just comes down to commitment and how much he listens,” the executive said. “Understanding [the] game at such a higher level goes such a long way.”
Another executive believes coaching could also be an option.
“Such a student of the game, he’s used to leading on [the] floor and in a locker room,” they said. “Could just see it translating well, in my opinion.”
“But I could see either front office or coaching in his future.”
