Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colon dies aged 33 after suffering brain injury that left him unable to walk

Former boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33, 11 years after he famously fell into a coma following a controversial loss.

Colon’s father took to social media to share the news on Thursday.

“Good morning, my people,” Colon’s father Richard wrote on Facebook. “I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world. Now he is in a better world.

“I did everything possible to fulfil his wish, his dream of bringing him on vacation to Puerto Rico as much as he desired, but couldn’t. “Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers.”

Colon was 16-0 (13 KOs) before his infamous fight with Terrel Williams in 2015.

In that bout, Colon appeared to be struck in the back of the head numerous times with illegal punches. Colon informed the referee, but the bout continued. Colon was later docked two points for a low blow.

The Puerto Rican was floored in the ninth round, and confusion thereafter saw his corner team remove his gloves, believing the fight was over. Instead, Colon was disqualified.

Colon was helped to his changing room, where he vomited and collapsed. He was then taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a subdural haematoma.

He underwent an emergency operation to reduce brain swelling and evacuate the haematoma. Subsequently, he fell into a coma which lasted 221 days.

Once Colon emerged from the coma, he remained in a vegetative state and was unable to speak without computer assistance.

He was cared for by his family until his passing.
