D’Angelo Russell believes Stephen Curry could benefit from a move to the Boston Celtics, arguing that the Golden State Warriors superstar needs more proven help around him late in his career. Russell specifically pointed to Boston’s veteran experience as a potential fit for Curry.
“I would love to see Stephen Curry go to Boston,” Russell said on The Backyard Podcast, via HoopsHype. “Just because I think he needs that type of help around him now.”
Russell’s comments come after a 2025-26 season in which Curry remained Golden State’s primary offensive engine despite the Warriors finishing 37-45, 10th in the Western Conference and losing in the Play-In Tournament. Curry averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 43 games while shooting 46.8% from the field, 39.3% from three-point range and 92.3% from the free-throw line.
The workload remained significant at age 37. Curry averaged 30.9 minutes per game and attempted 11.3 three-pointers per game, accounting for 26.6 of Golden State’s 114.2 points per game.
Jimmy Butler provided a second established scoring option after joining the Warriors during the season, averaging 20.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 38 games while shooting 51.9% from the field.
Russell questioned whether the Warriors currently have enough reliable offensive support around Curry.
“Who’s taking the load off him in Golden State?” Russell said. “The rookie? Is Jimmy? Oh yeah, healthy Jimmy.”
Golden State selected Yaxel Lendeborg with the 11th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft but did not add another established superstar after missing on LeBron James. The Warriors instead retained much of their veteran core, including Butler, Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton.
Boston, meanwhile, enters a different phase after trading Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia for Paul George and draft compensation. Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists for the Celtics in 2025-26, while George now joins a roster built around Jayson Tatum.
The Celtics finished 56-26, second in the Eastern Conference, before losing to the 76ers in seven games in the first round. Boston also added Mike Conley and Mitchell Robinson while retaining Neemias Queta, giving the roster additional veteran experience and interior depth.
Russell thinks the Warriors have the experience required to win down the stretch, but reaching that point could be a struggle.
“I think you have a veteran team that’s going to know how to win the last three minutes of a game,” he said. “They’re going to know how to win. I just, just getting to the last three minutes is where they’re going to struggle.”
A Curry-to-Boston scenario remains hypothetical, and Curry has continued to express his commitment to the Warriors. Golden State is also approaching a significant decision point, with Curry eligible for a two-year extension worth roughly $136.7 million beginning August 29.
