Mark English finished in first place in his 800 metres heat, meaning he can look forward to a place in the semi-finals.
Cian McPhillips failed to qualify from his heat, however, as he finished in eight place.

Ciara Neville is also unlikely to progress beyond her heat in the women’s 100 metres after she had to make do with fifth.
