The New York Knicks are expected to offer Karl-Anthony Towns a contract extension this offseason, though The Athletic’s James L. Edwards III does not believe the team will present the veteran center with a maximum contract.

A four-year max extension would reportedly be worth around $272.8 million beginning with the 2027-28 season.

Since arriving from the Minnesota Timberwolves before the 2024-25 campaign, Towns has lived up to expectations.

He has earned two All-Star selections with New York, played in 147 of a possible 164 regular-season games and averaged 22.2 points and 12.3 rebounds.

He also played a vital role in the Knicks’ championship run after adapting to a different offensive role under head coach Mike Brown.

Despite his production, Edwards believes New York will be cautious because Towns is entering his age-31 season and the team’s payroll is already rising.

Committing to a full maximum contract could limit the Knicks’ financial flexibility in future seasons.

Towns remains eligible to sign an extension throughout the season because he holds a player option for 2027-28.

If no agreement is reached before opening night, he would need to decline that option before signing a new long-term contract.
