The Boston Celtics have officially signed second-round draft pick Dillon Mitchell to a two-way contract, continuing their offseason focus on developing young, cost-controlled talent around an established championship core.
NBA insider Michael Scotto reported Wednesday that Boston signed Mitchell, whom the franchise selected with the 40th overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The move secures the athletic forward’s place in the organization after an encouraging Summer League showing.
Mitchell arrives after a winding four-year college career that included stops at Texas, Cincinnati and St. John’s. The 22-year-old built a reputation as an elite athlete and versatile defender while steadily expanding other areas of his game. Across 144 collegiate games, he averaged 8.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 59.3% from the field.
His final season at St. John’s showcased his all-around impact beyond scoring. Mitchell averaged 8.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and a career-high 3.0 assists in 37 games, adding 1.3 steals and 0.7 blocks per contest. While his perimeter shooting remained limited—he made just one three-pointer all season—his passing and defensive versatility stood out in a larger offensive role.
Mitchell also demonstrated his athletic upside during NBA Summer League. In three appearances, he averaged 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.3 blocks in 26.0 minutes per game. He shot 47.2% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range on limited attempts.
The two-way contract gives Boston flexibility while allowing Mitchell to split time between the Celtics and their G League affiliate.
Boston finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 56-26 record, good for second place in the Eastern Conference, before being eliminated by the Philadelphia 76ers in a seven-game first-round series.
