Kevin Durant believes Giannis Antetokounmpo has a ceiling few players in NBA history have reached, saying the Miami Heat superstar could become the greatest player ever if he fully maximizes his abilities.
“Greek Freak probably the number one guy I like to watch,” Durant said. “Greek Freak, I think, is a force and I’ve never seen anything like him. His ceiling, he could be the best player to ever play if he really wanted to. That’s pretty scary to think about, but he’s by far my favorite player to watch.”
Antetokounmpo enters the 2026-27 season after a major change in his career path, joining the Heat in a blockbuster trade with the Bucks. Miami acquired the two-time MVP alongside Bobby Portis while sending Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis and draft assets to Milwaukee.
The move gives Antetokounmpo a new championship opportunity alongside Bam Adebayo, creating one of the league’s most versatile frontcourts. Miami finished the 2025-26 regular season 43-39 and earned the No. 10 seed in the Eastern Conference, but the addition of Giannis immediately changed the team’s expectations.
Antetokounmpo has already built one of the strongest statistical resumes in NBA history. Through 13 seasons, he has averaged 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists while shooting 55.4% from the field. He has won two MVP awards, a Defensive Player of the Year award, an NBA championship and a Finals MVP award.
The 31-year-old forward averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 36 games during the 2025-26 season while shooting 62.4% from the field. His 63.6% effective field goal percentage was the highest mark of his career, despite limited availability because of injury.
Durant’s comments reflect the unique combination of physical dominance and skill that has defined Antetokounmpo’s rise. Since becoming a full-time star in 2016-17, Giannis has averaged at least 22.9 points in every season and has made eight All-NBA First Teams.
The biggest question surrounding Antetokounmpo’s legacy is continued postseason success. After winning the 2021 championship with Milwaukee, the Bucks failed to return to the NBA Finals during his remaining seasons with the franchise. In 2026, Miami is attempting to build a title contender around Giannis by surrounding him with defenders, shooters and another elite two-way player in Adebayo.
