LeBron James’ decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers was not driven solely by the franchise’s revamped roster. According to NBA insider Tony Jones, Joel Embiid played a central role throughout the recruitment process that ultimately brought the four-time NBA champion to Philadelphia.
“Per league sources, Joel Embiid was a heavy figure in LeBron’s recruitment, and that recruitment lasted throughout the process,” Jones reported on Friday.
The report provides new insight into how the 76ers secured one of the biggest free-agent signings of the 2026 offseason. James officially signed a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option for the second season, choosing a veteran minimum deal in pursuit of another championship after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers following eight seasons.
Philadelphia had already reshaped its roster before James’ arrival. Earlier this month, the 76ers acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics in exchange for Paul George, two first-round picks and two second-round selections, giving the franchise another All-NBA talent to pair with Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
Embiid’s involvement throughout the recruitment process underscores the organization’s commitment to building around its franchise center. The 2023 NBA MVP is entering the first season of his three-year maximum extension and remains the cornerstone of a team that has quickly transformed into one of the league’s favorites in the Eastern Conference.
Despite appearing in only 38 games during the 2025-26 season, Embiid remained one of the NBA’s most productive centers. He averaged 26.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.2 blocks while shooting 48.9% from the field. Philadelphia finished with Tyrese Maxey leading the team in scoring at 28.3 points per game, while rookie V.J. Edgecombe contributed 16.0 points across 75 games.
James also continued to perform at an elite level in his age-41 season. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 regular-season games with the Lakers while shooting 51.5% from the field. During Los Angeles’ playoff run, he raised his production to 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists over 10 postseason games.
James described the move as his “last decision” after acknowledging he seriously considered retirement following the Lakers’ season. Instead of pursuing a larger contract elsewhere, he accepted a significant pay cut to join a roster built to compete immediately for an NBA title.
The recruitment effort spearheaded by Embiid appears to have been a decisive factor. Rather than relying exclusively on the front office, Philadelphia’s franchise player remained actively involved as the organization pursued arguably the most accomplished free agent on the market.
The 76ers now project one of the NBA’s strongest starting lineups, featuring Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Brown, James and Embiid. Philadelphia also strengthened its depth by adding Anfernee Simons, Dean Wade and rookie Labaron Philon Jr., giving the club a balanced roster around its star core.
