LeBron James eyed Cavaliers reunion alongside Kyrie Irving

LeBron James reportedly explored the possibility of reuniting with Kyrie Irving in Cleveland as he continues to weigh his next move in free agency.

According to Vincent Goodwill of ESPN, James had been encouraging his former teammate to join him in a potential return to the Cavaliers.

However, the Dallas Mavericks have not shown interest in discussing a trade with Cleveland, and Irving is said to be happy staying in Dallas.

James is believed to be deciding between a third stint with the Cavaliers and a return to the Miami Heat, where he captured two NBA championships and earned two MVP awards between 2010 and 2014.

While Cleveland boasts a talented backcourt led by Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, the team’s biggest concern remains its frontcourt after Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley struggled in the Eastern Conference Finals against the eventual champion New York Knicks.

Miami, meanwhile, could offer James a different role.

Following the Heat’s acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo, James would have the opportunity to play alongside Giannis and Bam Adebayo in a less demanding playmaking role, similar to the one he embraced during the Lakers’ 2019-20 championship season.

A former teammate told ESPN that James no longer needs another title to shape his legacy.

“To be the GOAT, you got to win championships, etc. Now that’s settled. Now it’s about his joy, his happiness. If it ends in a championship, great. But he won’t be defined by how this ends.”

The same source added that Miami could provide an environment where James simply enjoys the game without carrying the burden of being the team’s savior.

“He can play freely. He can be Tom Brady late in his career, not worrying about being the hero.”
