The NBA has opened an investigation into Gary Trent Jr.’s new four-year, $64 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who reported Thursday that the league is probing the free-agent agreement, citing an NBA spokesperson.

The league has not disclosed the reason for the investigation, and there has been no indication that wrongdoing has occurred. The NBA routinely reviews certain free-agent signings to ensure compliance with the league’s collective bargaining agreement, including potential concerns involving early negotiations or salary-cap rules.

Trent agreed to remain in Milwaukee after declining his player option following the 2025-26 season. The 27-year-old guard averaged 8.1 points, 1.2 assists and 1.0 rebounds in 65 games while shooting 38.7% from the field and 36.0% from three-point range. Although he started only 21 games, Trent continued to provide floor spacing, averaging 1.9 made three-pointers per contest in 21.2 minutes.

His new contract came during one of the most dramatic offseasons in franchise history. Milwaukee entered the summer after finishing 32-50 and missing the playoffs, ending a disappointing campaign in which it placed 11th in the Eastern Conference despite receiving strong individual production from Giannis Antetokounmpo, who averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 36 games before being traded.

The Bucks officially ushered in a rebuild by sending Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in exchange for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, three future first-round picks, a pick swap and a second-round selection. Milwaukee also hired Taylor Jenkins as head coach following Doc Rivers’ departure.

The organization has continued to prioritize younger talent. Milwaukee selected Brayden Burries with the 10th overall pick and Nate Ament at No. 13 in the 2026 NBA Draft, while also re-signing Ousmane Dieng and acquiring veteran guard Caris LeVert in a trade with the Detroit Pistons.
