Victor Wembanyama has agreed to a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs, according to ESPN.
The deal includes a player option for the fifth and final season, keeping the franchise cornerstone under contract for the foreseeable future.
Despite being eligible for a larger extension worth up to $303 million through the 30 percent supermax escalators, Wembanyama opted for the standard 25 percent maximum.
The decision came after extensive discussions between the Spurs, Wembanyama, and his representatives, who explored multiple contract structures before reaching an agreement.
San Antonio reportedly offered the full supermax as well as several alternative extension frameworks, giving Wembanyama every opportunity to maximize his earnings.
However, the All-NBA selection and reigning Defensive Player of the Year ultimately chose to leave money on the table in order to provide the Spurs with greater financial flexibility.
According to ESPN, Wembanyama’s decision was driven by a desire to help the organization maintain the resources needed to build and sustain a championship-caliber roster around him throughout the coming years.
Wembanyama decided on the 25% maximum instead of the 30% supermax escalators to $303M, after he and the Spurs went through multiple frameworks. A major decision for the All-NBA star and Defensive Player of the Year entering his fourth season.
