Warriors’ LeBron James pursuit hinges on Anthony Davis trade

The Golden State Warriors’ hopes of signing LeBron James may depend on whether they can first acquire Anthony Davis from the Washington Wizards, according to ESPN.

Golden State has reportedly explored the possibility, but discussions have yet to gain momentum because Washington is believed to be seeking Jimmy Butler along with multiple first-round draft picks in exchange for Davis.

“I think LeBron’s been open-minded, but the Warriors’ whole plan going into free agency was, ‘Okay, let’s see if we can get Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis,’” ESPN’s Shams Charania said on Stephen A. Smith’s radio show.

Charania added that reuniting James with Davis could be the key to making Golden State an attractive destination.

“I think the big draw for LeBron with the Warriors would be seeing if there’s an avenue to be a package deal with Davis,” Charania said.

“Short of that, I don’t think the Warriors are high on his list, and I think the Warriors themselves believe they’re not on that list unless they’re able to trade for Anthony Davis.”

Davis was acquired by the Wizards from the Dallas Mavericks at last season’s trade deadline but has yet to play a game for Washington.

If Golden State is unable to complete a deal for Davis, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves are still viewed as the leading contenders to sign James.
