LeBron James is not expected to make an immediate decision in free agency and is taking time to evaluate all of his options before choosing his next team.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, James is prioritizing the opportunity to compete for a championship over maximizing his salary.
Because he is open to different contract structures, his free agency is not preventing other teams from completing their offseason moves as it did during previous decisions in 2010 and 2014.
“LeBron James is not in a rush right now to make a decision,” Charania said.
“He’s evaluating everything. His biggest priority in all this is finding a team where he feels he’s going to have a chance to play meaningful basketball and compete for a championship. My understanding is this will not be a financially driven, money decision.”
Charania added that James’ agent, Rich Paul, has received interest from roughly a dozen teams since free agency began.
“His agent, Rich Paul, has been getting about a dozen pitches ever since free agency opened.”
The Warriors, Cavaliers, and Heat continue to be viewed as the leading contenders to sign James, while the Nuggets and 76ers have also reached out to express interest.
“LeBron James will probably take the next few days to sift through all that and figure out exactly where he’s at. There is no timetable,” Charania added.
