Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly narrowed his list of preferred trade destinations by informing several interested teams that he would not commit to a long-term extension if they acquired him from the Bucks.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Antetokounmpo’s camp made it clear to at least four teams that he would not sign a new contract with them, giving the former MVP significant leverage because he can become a free agent in 2027.
The Heat, Celtics, and Timberwolves were among the teams Antetokounmpo was reportedly willing to join, while the Trail Blazers are believed to have been one of the franchises he ruled out as a long-term destination.
Although Antetokounmpo previously signed contract extensions with Milwaukee in 2020 and 2023, he reportedly informed the organization he would not do so again, paving the way for a trade.
His situation contrasted sharply with Damian Lillard’s departure from Portland in 2023.
While Lillard attempted to force a move to Miami, he still had four years remaining on his contract and lacked the leverage to control his destination.
Antetokounmpo, however, was ultimately dealt to one of his preferred teams, the Heat.
