Virtus Bologna’s elimination in the Italian league semifinals against Venezia not only ended a disappointing season but also accelerated plans for major changes within the club.
After failing to achieve its objectives, the Italian side is preparing for a busy summer that will include significant adjustments to both the roster and the coaching staff.
The goal is to build a stronger and more competitive team for next season, and the first key decision has already been made.
The club has officially named Alex Mumbru as its new head coach.
Following Dusko Ivanovic’s departure during the season, Virtus entrusted Nenad Jakovljevic with the role on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.
With the season now over, however, the club has decided to move forward with a permanent solution by appointing the Spanish coach, who is widely regarded as one of the most experienced and respected coaches in European basketball.
Mumbru will arrive in Bologna after leading Germany to the EuroBasket title and will continue in his role with the national team while taking over at Virtus.
His appointment also marks a return to the EuroLeague, where he previously coached Valencia Basket.
The move means the Catalan coach will once again combine club and national team duties, something he has spoken positively about in the past.
As he told Eurohoops: “It’s good that coaches can combine both whenever possible.”
