Atlanta Hawks are optimistic about keeping CJ McCollum in town beyond this season.
While the veteran guard is set to hit free agency, league sources cited by Jake Fischer and Michael Scotto suggest there is mutual interest in a new deal, with McCollum potentially earning close to $20 million annually on his next contract.
The Hawks are not expected to stop there.
Team decision-makers are reportedly exploring ways to add more playmaking and rim pressure in the backcourt, while also looking to strengthen the frontcourt rotation around Onyeka Okongwu.
Those goals could influence Atlanta’s strategy with the eighth pick in the upcoming draft.
Around the league, many executives believe the Hawks will target either a guard or a big man.
If the expected top prospects are gone early, players such as Mikel Brown, Keaton Wagler, Kingston Flemings, Darius Acuff, and Michigan center Aday Mara could all be in consideration.
There is also a growing belief that Brown, Wagler, and Flemings are unlikely to slide past Atlanta’s selection.
Acuff, meanwhile, is viewed as a candidate to come off the board shortly afterward, with Milwaukee at No. 10 often mentioned as the latest he could fall, even as Sacramento continues to be linked to him at No. 7.
