The Brooklyn Nets enter the offseason facing pressure to become more competitive after several losing seasons, but without some of the advantages typically available to rebuilding teams.
Because Brooklyn does not control its own first-round pick in next year’s draft, the organization has little incentive to endure another tanking season and instead must focus on improving the roster through other avenues.
One option is free agency, where the Nets are expected to be among the teams with significant spending power.
Brooklyn has already been linked to Austin Reaves, though many around the league believe the guard will ultimately remain with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Nets could also target younger players with upside, including restricted free agents Tari Eason, Jalen Duren, and Peyton Watson, as they look to build around veteran forward Michael Porter Jr..
Another possibility is moving up in the draft, although league executives expect that to be challenging given the high value teams place on the top prospects in this year’s class.
With limited incentive to rebuild through losses, Brooklyn’s front office is expected to be aggressive in exploring ways to make the roster more competitive in the short term.
