LeBron James joining the Phoenix Suns may be highly unlikely, but the idea continues to generate discussion around the league.
According to Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic, there are several factors that could make Phoenix an attractive destination for the NBA’s all-time leading scorer if he were ever to consider a move from the Los Angeles Lakers.
One of the biggest basketball-related reasons is James’ potential role within the Suns’ offense.
Unlike his situation with the Lakers this past season, where he often shared playmaking duties, he could operate as Phoenix’s primary facilitator and have greater control of the offense.
There are also several familiar faces within the organization.
James developed a strong relationship with Devin Booker while helping Team USA win gold at the 2024 Olympic Games, while Suns head coach Jordan Ott previously worked on the Lakers’ coaching staff.
Phoenix guard Jordan Goodwin also spent the end of the 2024-25 season as a teammate of James’ in Los Angeles. Geography could be another factor.
Phoenix is located just a short flight from Los Angeles, allowing James to maintain close ties to the city where he has spent the past several years.
In addition, Tucson, where his younger son Bryce attends the University of Arizona, is only about a two-hour drive from Phoenix.
While Rankin acknowledges that a move remains extremely unlikely, the combination of basketball fit, existing relationships and family proximity helps explain why the Suns continue to be mentioned as a potential, albeit remote, destination for James.
