The San Antonio Spurs kept their season alive Thursday night behind another dominant postseason performance from Victor Wembanyama, routing the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-91 in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals at Frost Bank Center to force a winner-take-all Game 7.
San Antonio now heads to Oklahoma City for Game 7 on Saturday, with the winner advancing to face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals beginning Wednesday. The Knicks swept the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals.
After a flat defensive showing in a 127-114 Game 5 loss, the Spurs responded with one of their sharpest performances of the postseason. San Antonio controlled the game early, dictated the physical tone and never allowed the defending champions to settle into rhythm offensively.
Wembanyama finished with 28 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 28 minutes, continuing a playoff run that has defined San Antonio’s success in the series. The 7-foot-4 star made his first two shots, both from beyond the arc, and blocked a layup attempt by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the opening 90 seconds as the Spurs jumped to a 9-2 lead.
The French center was active from the opening quarter, posting 11 points, five rebounds, one assist and one block in the first 12 minutes. His interior presence disrupted Oklahoma City’s spacing while also stretching the defense on offense.
Wembanyama’s performance also moved him deeper into Spurs postseason history. He joined franchise Hall of Famers David Robinson and Tim Duncan as the only players to record at least five games of 25 points and 10 rebounds in a single playoff run.
San Antonio received scoring support throughout the lineup. Rookie Dylan Harper added 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting with six rebounds and four assists off the bench, while Stephon Castle contributed 17 points and nine assists. Devin Vassell added 12 points and delivered two momentum-shifting blocked shots, including a forceful rejection of Chet Holmgren near the rim.
The Spurs broke the game open in the third quarter through defense. Oklahoma City went scoreless for roughly eight minutes as San Antonio ripped off 22 consecutive points, turning a competitive game into a rout and extending the lead to 92-64 late in the period.
Oklahoma City never found offensive rhythm. Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 15 points but shot just 6-for-18 from the field and missed all five of his three-point attempts. Holmgren finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Jalen Williams returned after missing three games because of a hamstring injury but scored one point in 10 minutes.
The physical edge of the series also remained intact. Holmgren and Vassell exchanged words and bumped after the Spurs wing blocked a second-quarter dunk attempt, another sign of how emotionally charged the matchup has become.
The series has swung dramatically from game to game, with an average margin of victory exceeding 15 points. San Antonio’s three wins have come by an average of more than 18 points, and Wembanyama has been at the center of each one.
