Michael Valgren powered to victory on stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia after launching an attack just over a kilometre from the finish in Andalo.
The EF Education-EasyPost rider completed Wednesday’s hilly 202km stage from Cassano d’Adda in four hours, 41 minutes and 33 seconds, finishing ahead of Andreas Leknessund and Damiano Caruso.
Valgren, 34, had worked alongside Movistar’s Einer Rubio from 20 kilometres remaining before making his decisive move on the final climb to the line.
The triumph was a first grand tour stage victory for the Dane, who suffered a career-threatening injury at the Route d’Occitanie in 2022.
“When I have good legs, I’m pretty good at it,” Valgren said, having celebrated with a lucky Pokemon charm given to him by his son.
Valgren’s compatriot Jonas Vingegaard, who claimed his fourth stage win of this year’s race on Tuesday, comfortably retained his commanding overall lead.
He and the rest of the general classification contenders are likely to enjoy another calmer day, with stage 18 likely to be one for the sprinters before two demanding mountain tests settle the race for the pink jersey.
