Duncan Robinson offered a detailed postgame reflection after the Detroit Pistons were eliminated in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday in Detroit.
The veteran forward addressed the emotional weight of the defeat and the broader meaning of postseason setbacks, pointing to how such moments can shape teams moving forward.
“I don’t know that you have to go through it, but there is a level of pain that comes with experiencing these types of losses that I think if channeled the right way, can be invaluable.”
He expanded on how experience in high-pressure situations can influence development, while also acknowledging that it is not a mandatory path for success.
“I mean, the team we played tonight is a pretty good example of that. You know, I mean, the sense of urgency that they came out with, obviously, you know, you look down that roster and that roster has been through some pain. You know, they’ve lost this stage of the season in the past and they played like it tonight.”
Detroit entered the season with major expectations after a 60-win campaign and a top seed in the East. Robinson emphasized the importance of context when evaluating the season as a whole.
“I think that’s probably what the next couple weeks are for. To be honest, there hasn’t been a lot of reflection. You know, for me personally, I think really us as a group right now, I think we’ve just been just so locked into the day to day and just trying to enjoy and make the most of every opportunity.”
He also highlighted the team’s internal growth and consistency across the roster, pointing to collective contributions throughout the playoff run.
“This is the only team I’ve ever been on where everybody contributed to winning a playoff game. Like that’s so unique in this league.”
Robinson credited the group’s chemistry and shared approach to competition as key elements of their identity during the season.
“You know I think the superpower of this group was our connectivity, our depth and just celebrating each other’s success. It’s something a lot of people talk about in this league of trying to do it.”
He added that the culture inside the locker room stood out compared to his previous experiences, especially in how players responded to each other’s performances.
“I really felt like this group enjoyed coming in and being around each other, wanting to see each other do well. You know, when it was someone’s night, we were leaning into that person.”
When asked what went wrong in the decisive loss, Robinson pointed to execution and intensity rather than long-term structural issues.
“I think, you know, just we didn’t come out with the right disposition for a game seven, you know, and that’s that was apparent through all the areas that we sort of prided ourselves on this year.”
He also noted Cleveland’s early physical tone and pace as a defining factor in how the game unfolded.
“You know, you got to give credit to them because they just came out with a force and a pace that we weren’t able to match.”
As the Pistons shift into the offseason, Robinson said the focus will eventually move toward reflection, development, and preparation for the next step.
