Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick and general manager Rob Pelinka addressed the media in a joint end-of-season press conference following the team’s playoff elimination, offering a detailed review of the season and the path ahead. The discussion centered on roster evaluation, internal growth, and offseason planning.

Pelinka described the beginning of the offseason process as a full review of the roster and season structure. He said, “This is a market with championship expectations and now begins the process for leadership here, JJ, myself, to deconstruct the things in the season that went well.”

He added that the organization will take a structured approach to improvement, stating, “And to look at the parts of the season that we can elevate and bring to the next level. And we’re going to be incredibly process-oriented about that, working closely with the front office staff upstairs, with the coaching staff, to deliver a product and a roster next season that our Lakers fans can be incredibly excited about and honored by.”

Pelinka also reflected on the playoff series, acknowledging the opponent and circumstances while emphasizing competitiveness. “We ran into the defending champs. I’m very, very proud of how resilient our team was, how hard our guys fought,” he said. “Having a less than full roster is never an excuse in this business. It’s just a circumstance and in this case an adverse circumstance that came our way.”

He further explained how injuries and roster fluctuation shaped the season’s evaluation process, noting the importance of learning from adversity rather than avoiding it.

A major theme of the press conference was the usage of multiple primary ball-handlers throughout the season. Pelinka described the structure as unusual but functional, saying, “Our team and our roster had three quarterbacks on it in LeBron and Luka and Austin and that’s in some sense a luxury that we had different guys that could make plays in different parts of the season.”

He also highlighted the importance of cohesion among the trio, adding, “And then the response of those players and playing different roles throughout the season and having an evolution themselves was incredibly impressive.”

On roster continuity, Pelinka addressed the franchise’s two long-tenured core pieces. Speaking on LeBron James, he said, “Of course, any team, including ours, would love to have LeBron James on their roster.” On Austin Reaves, he added, “We want his Odyssey to continue to unfold in the purple and gold.”

Pelinka also pointed to roster-building flexibility as a key offseason factor. “The key word is optionality,” he said. “There is several ways to do it in the draft, through trades, and through free agency.”

He further emphasized alignment around the team’s franchise centerpiece, stating, “The archetype of the roster that we want is going to be retrofitted around Luka and the things he needs.”

As the Lakers transition into the offseason, Pelinka reiterated that evaluations, roster construction, and organizational adjustments have already begun, with the front office set to continue shaping the next iteration of the team.
