The Dallas Mavericks announced Friday that they have named Mike Schmitz as the franchise’s new general manager.

Schmitz will report directly to president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri and oversee day-to-day basketball operations, roster strategy and organizational planning.

Before joining Dallas, Schmitz served as assistant general manager for the Portland Trail Blazers, where he was heavily involved in scouting and player evaluation.

“Mike is one of the most respected evaluators and basketball minds in the NBA,” Ujiri said. “He brings intelligence, discipline, humility and a relentless work ethic to everything he does.”

Ujiri also praised Schmitz’s ability to help create a connected organizational culture.

“We are building something special in Dallas, and Mike will be a major part of that vision,” Ujiri said.
