The Los Angeles Lakers advanced to the Western Conference semifinals with a 98-78 Game 6 win over the Houston Rockets on Friday night at Toyota Center, sealing the series behind LeBron James’ 28 points and a dominant defensive performance.
The victory sends the fourth-seeded Lakers to face the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the next round, starting Tuesday.
LeBron James described the mindset behind the series win and his approach at this stage of his career.
“Yeah, I mean, the mission has always stayed the same, no matter what my role has been throughout my career, and that’s to go out there and try to dominate, try to make plays, try to, you know, incite my teammates, make them feel, you know, like we can, you know, do the inevitable.”
The Lakers closed out Houston despite missing key contributors at different points of the series, a challenge James acknowledged when discussing the context of the win.
“So, obviously, you know, we was going up against the odds to start this series, you know, with Luka and AR being out. But, you know, we just came in with a great game plan throughout six games.”
James also emphasized the importance of stability and communication as the series shifted momentum multiple times.
“We obviously allowed them to get back into it in Game 5 and Game 5… and just try to stay together, you know, even throughout the adversity and, you know, let these guys know, stay even keel.”
He highlighted his role as the most experienced player in the group and how that shaped his leadership approach during the series.
“I have the most experience on the team and had the most playoff experience on the team, so I know how a series can go. So I just try to, you know, bleed that into them, bleed the confidence into them to go out and play.”
Looking ahead to the matchup with the Thunder, James pointed to discipline and ball security as key factors.
“You have to protect the ball versus those guys. You know, they play physical, handsy defense… if you allow them to get a lot of pick sixes, it just ignites their home court.”
He also acknowledged Oklahoma City’s depth and star power in the upcoming series.
“We know the head of the snake… but they’re a really full-equipped team. It’s not just Shai… it trickles down to everybody in that star lineup and to the bench.”
James credited the Lakers’ role players for shaping the outcome of the series, highlighting contributions across multiple games.
“I thought Luke Kennard, the way he played early in the series… Marcus was steady throughout… Rui tonight was sensational, hitting big-time threes.”
He added that the team’s identity is built on shared responsibility rather than individual production.
“It’s not going to be just one guy… everybody’s going to have to have their moment.”
James closed with a reflection on how he set the tone physically in the elimination game and the mindset behind it.
“Aggression… I just thought, you know, just my mindset, you know, figuring out a way how we can close this thing out. We know the hardest game is the closeout game.”
When asked about the long-running narrative of competing with time, James responded briefly.
“I’m kicking his ass. He could go to somebody else at this point. He already lost to me. It’s over with.”
