Here in the UK, it’s fair to say that sport plays an integral role in our culture. Whether we’re cheering on our football team in the local derby, basking in the sun (or sheltering from the rain) at Wimbledon, enjoying a civilised Sunday watching the cricket, or cheering on our national heroes at one of Golf’s grand slams.

While there are a number of sports and activities deemed quintessentially British, basketball is probably not a sport that instantly springs to mind. American sports? Absolutely, but not necessarily UK. Until now that is.

In recent years, UK basketball has been gaining a lot of traction and is now covered by a wide range of bookmakers and betting markets, including prominent betting sites in the UK such as Sky Bet and Paddy Power. In fact, if you do fancy a punt on tonight’s matches, you can enjoy 4/9 odds on the Newcastle Eagles defeating Leicester Riders with Sky Bet. Paddy Power meanwhile, have the Caledonia Gladiators at 11/10 over the Bristol Flyers.

With so many bookmakers now covering UK basketball, it’s time to find out which leagues have the biggest followings, and which bets are most popular.

The UK Basketball League Pyramid

While basketball in the UK may not be on the same level as the USA’s NBA, it’s certainly got an impressive following. A following that is growing every single day. Will we ever see our own Michael Jordan, LeBron James, or the late Kobe Bryant? Who knows, but it will certainly be fun to find out.

UK basketball leagues form a 5-tier pyramid consisting of the following:

Tier 1: SLB (Super League Basketball)

At the top of this metaphorical pyramid is Super League Basketball (SLB) formerly known as the British Basketball League (BBL).

This is the top league of UK basketball. It is the UK equivalent of the NBA, and the UK basketball equivalent of football’s Premier League.

Unlike football’s EPL however, it operates on a franchise system similar to the US and does not feature promotion or relegation to the leagues below it. Currently it is the London Lions who sit top of the table on 50 points with the Caledonia Gladiators sitting bottom on just 14 points.

Tier 2: BCB (British Championship Basketball

The second tier in UK basketball leagues is British Championship Basketball, AKA the BCB.

This is a newly-formed UK basketball league established in 2025 that was established by the 13 former clubs in the NBL Division 1, as well as a newly promoted club, that was designed to bridge the gap between the SLB and the NBL’s first division.

In football terms, think of it as the equivalent of the Championship.

Tiers 3 – 5: NBL (National Basketball Leagues) Divisions 1, 2, and 3

Finally, founded back in 1972 we have the National Basketball Leagues. These divisions were designed to raise UK basketball standards and add a competitive element to the matches, with the addition of promotion and relegation.

The first NBL division (NBL1) forms the top semi-pro tier. NBL2 and NBL3 are made up of regionalised teams hoping to progress up through the divisions with the ultimate goal of gaining promotion to NBL1, before eventually progressing to the BCB.

Popular Super League Basketball (SLB) UK Betting Markets

Now that we know a little bit more behind the UK’s basketball leagues, it’s time to talk sports betting.

With the SLB currently proving to be the most popular basketball league in the UK, it should come as no surprise to learn that this is the league where much of the sports gambling money is. After all, it is the highest level of basketball in the UK, and with teams such as the Sheffield Sharks, London Lions, Newcastle Eagles, Surrey 89ers, and many more all showcasing such fantastic talent out on the court, that’s hardly surprising.

So, what are some of the most popular UK betting markets for SLB? Let’s take a look, shall we?

Total Points

One of the most popular betting markets for UK basketball, and one which is offered by virtually all bookmakers covering UK basketball is total points betting.

Total points betting allows punters to wager on whether the total number of points accumulated during the match is over/under a specific margin. Basically, the wager can go one of two ways. Nice and simple.

Match Winner

Speaking of nice and simple, arguably the simplest UK basketball bet of all is match winner. As the name implies, with this bet, bettors can wager on which team they predict will win the match.

To make things a bit more interesting however, there are a few variations, including line betting or points spread.

MVP

Pretty self-explanatory here. If you predict that a certain player is going to be crowned MVP, why not place a bet on it?

Player Total

With player totals, punters can bet on a variety of different player-oriented stats, including points scored, turnovers, steals, and rebounds.
