Bronny James outlined the Los Angeles Lakers’ preparation approach ahead of their first-round series against the Houston Rockets on Thursday, April 16, emphasizing detail work, mental readiness, and execution under pressure.

He described the build-up as a structured process centered on preparation and discipline. “Going over scouts, going over game plan, locking in on the small details, stuff like that, and just getting our body and minds right for the battle we about to go into. Just doing all the right things to prepare for what’s coming.”

The Lakers guard also highlighted the importance of controlling possessions against Houston’s defensive pressure. “That’s one of our most important details that we’re focused on, taking care of the ball. And second is boxing out. So we got to make sure we keep them off the glass and take care of the ball and everything else will just fall into place.”

He pointed to rebounding and ball security as central factors in handling Houston’s physical style. The Rockets ranked among the league’s most active defensive teams, creating added emphasis on possession management in a playoff setting.

Bronny addressed the opportunity of stepping into postseason basketball after missing earlier playoff availability. “It’s what I wanted. My dream to play in the playoffs. Wasn’t able to play in March so this is a bigger stage than that. And I’m totally excited to get out there with my teammates and try to get some wins and try to make it further in the playoffs.”

He also discussed the Lakers’ internal confidence despite injury setbacks during the regular season. “No, I don’t think we’ve been tested. I think we’ve been playing great basketball with the guys that we’ve had. I know our guys totally believe that we can go out there and win a series.”

Chemistry with his father LeBron James and learning tendencies has also played a role in his development. “I’ve been watching him for however long and I kind of picked up on his tendencies… So I think we’ll be able to work good together. My IQ isn’t going to be far behind him so I feel like I can double what he’s doing and see where it goes.”

LeBron’s influence has shaped his preparation habits, particularly on the defensive end. “He’s been in the playoffs a lot. So I like to study guys like him, especially smaller guards, smaller defensive minded guards. I’ve been studying him and watching him, asking questions, stuff like that.”

Bronny also stressed communication and trust in leadership during playoff preparation. “He’s been in the playoffs that many times. He’s won series, won finals. So I think we just need to have our mind open and ears open and listen to whatever he says because he knows the most.”

Defensive assignments against Houston’s key players remain a focal point. “I think just tuning in on our important players, tuning in on KD and Sengun and making sure we’re bought into what we need to do with them and our game plan with them.”

He also noted Houston’s late-season surge heading into the series. “I think they’re just playing winning basketball and that’s what you want to do when you’re getting closer to the postseason. So we’ll be watching a bunch of film and tuning in on little things and stuff like that.”
