Los Angeles Lakers forward Jake LaRavia spoke on Tuesday, April 14 as the team prepared for Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series against the Houston Rockets on Saturday, April 18 at 8:30 p.m. ET at Crypto.com Arena.

LaRavia emphasized mental readiness across a full playoff schedule and the importance of sustaining focus beyond the regular season. “Just kind of like the mindset of going out there and knowing that like just making sure that I’m preparing myself as best as I can.”

He added that availability mindset remains central to his preparation approach heading into the postseason stretch. “To be able to play every game and just having a mindset of, you know, playing through, you know, little things if they come up. But, I feel like it’s mostly a mindset of just knowing that I’m going to play every game.”

Defensively, LaRavia addressed the likelihood of matching up with elite scorers during the series, including Kevin Durant in specific lineups. “Yeah, I always take those challenges with pride and obviously guarded him in the matchups that we’ve had previously. He’s one of the greatest scorers ever.”

The Lakers forward credited long-term development for his expanded defensive responsibilities in high-pressure matchups. “I mean it’s just something I’ve worked at, you know, for a good amount of time now. And I feel like now I’ve earned some respect to be able to go out there and defend and earn the trust of the coaches and the players.”

Physicality is expected to be a defining factor in the series against Houston, and LaRavia stressed execution over discussion. “To go out there and do it. Like at the end of the day, we can talk about physicality and how physical they are, but at the end of the day, we got to go out there and we just got to do it.”

He added that rebounding and pressure handling will determine possession control throughout the matchup. “We got to be more physical than them. We got to be able to handle the pressure. We got to be able to limit their offensive rebounds.”

LaRavia also pointed to continuity and chemistry within evolving Lakers lineups as key to adjusting during injury stretches. “Kind of just using those last couple games that we had to get used to this new group and the new lineups that we have.”

He described his role as consistent regardless of roster changes, focusing on energy and defensive execution. “My role for me personally is pretty similar to what it’s been when we were healthy as far as just being energy defender crashing shooting threes when I get the looks.”

Execution against Houston’s defensive pressure was highlighted as a primary series determinant. “Just us being able to take care of the ball and execute our plays and match their physicality even when we’re on the offensive side just is going to be huge for us.”

LaRavia closed by reinforcing fundamentals work, referencing boxing drills and physical repetition introduced in practice. “It was good to kind of just come back to what started it, you know, when you were in middle school and high school and stuff with doing those drills.”

The Lakers and Rockets open their series on Saturday, April 18 with both teams entering Game 1 with physical identity and execution expected to define the matchup.
