James Harden made his Cleveland Cavaliers debut on Saturday, scoring 23 points and dishing out eight assists in a 132-126 victory over the Sacramento Kings. Harden, acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Darius Garland and a second-round pick, described the trade as “amazing for both sides” during a postgame interview.
“Life comes at you. I think it was just amazing for both sides…both sides very well. I’m happy. I’m sure they’re happy where they are. You know, they got some young talent. They got a couple picks, and for me, I’m just here with some great guys, ultimately trying to compete for a championship,” Harden said.
Harden spoke highly of his former Clippers teammates, including Ivica Zubac, who was traded to the Pacers. “I talked to Zu yesterday, the day before…he was hurt, because he didn’t really understand. But as he gets older, he understands this is a business,” Harden said. “Whether it’s the organization doing what’s best for them or me doing what’s best for my family, that’s all that matters. So I’m just happy that it was amazing peaceful ending and it’s all love on both sides.”
The veteran guard praised the Cavaliers organization and his new teammates, highlighting the team’s balance and coaching staff. “You got a combination of young guys who understand the role, athletic bigs, shooting everywhere, coach everywhere…I’ll figure out where I fit in. It’s not going to be hard at all,” Harden said. “Just do what y’all do, and I’ll figure it out.”
Harden also reflected on the fans and his legacy with the Clippers. “The love and support they showed me…being a kid from LA, hooping in front of my family and childhood people was an honor,” he said. “My job is to be a leader, to be helpful, to be encouraging to players and staff…basketball is one thing, but you can leave an impact on someone’s day or life.”
On the court, Harden’s debut was productive. He shot 7 of 13, including 5 of 8 from three-point range, and added eight assists. Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 35 points, including a free throw that sealed the win with 35 seconds remaining. Jarrett Allen contributed 29 points and 10 rebounds as the Cavaliers won for the eighth time in nine games. Sacramento’s Nique Clifford scored 30 points, while Russell Westbrook added 21 points and nine assists.
Harden addressed his fit with the team after a short preparation period. “This is my first time playing 5-on-5 since about a week ago…it’s a little rusty. We’ll see what works, what doesn’t work,” he said. “This organization is well-coached, very talented, and I saw an opportunity to help get over that next step. I’m happy both sides saw where I can fit.”
Cleveland will travel to Denver on Monday night for their next matchup, while Sacramento continues its struggles with a visit to New Orleans.
