Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson lauded James Harden and Donovan Mitchell following their 132-126 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday. “Made all the big plays. Two big threes, obviously, and then a great one-on-one duel with DeRozan at the end,” Atkinson said of Harden.
Atkinson highlighted Harden’s decision-making and ability to integrate into the Cavaliers’ offense. “James is obviously gifted as a passer and as a scorer, but seemed to be very selective about where he took his shots tonight,” he said. “He makes others better. That’s why this is a fit for us, and it was good to see it manifest itself tonight.”
The coach praised Harden’s fourth-quarter performance, noting his control over the game’s tempo. “Phenomenal. Controlled the game, controlled the tempo, made the big shots, and defensively, he met that great contest on DeRozan without fouling him,” Atkinson said. “Helped us close the game in tandem with Don.”
Atkinson also reflected on the team’s composure during a competitive matchup. “We do have confidence about us now. There’s no panic. They were making incredible shots, but we kept our calm, and it helps when you have James Harden and Donovan Mitchell to close a game like that.”
On the synergy between Harden and Mitchell, Atkinson was encouraged. “I didn’t see it your turn, my turn either. There were some ISO plays, but it was more team concept. Great to see it,” he said.
The coach also praised Keon Ellis for his defensive contributions in the closing minutes. “He made some huge defensive plays. Showed real pop and athleticism. That’s a good sign,” Atkinson said.
Regarding lineup management, Atkinson explained adjustments for closing units. “There are three guys I could have put in. Jaylon was struggling a little with a turned ankle. That’s part of being a really good, deep team—it’s going to be a different closing lineup a lot of the time.”
Atkinson praised the bench for shifting momentum in the third quarter. “They went on a run, plus 22. TB and CP were great. Nae’Qwan brings energy, and Dennis obviously contributed. That switched the game,” he said.
He also noted the growth of Jaylon Tyson in his second year. “It’s been a big turnaround from last year. We worked on getting his shot off quicker. He took advantage of the opportunity and now is super efficient in the starting lineup,” Atkinson said.
Finally, Atkinson addressed Tyson’s adjustment alongside Harden and Mitchell. “He’s had to adjust roles a lot. He’ll find his niche. I have complete confidence he’ll adapt to whatever role we ask of him going forward,” the coach said.
Cleveland will look to continue its momentum when the Cavaliers face the Denver Nuggets on Monday night, while Sacramento travels to New Orleans.
