The Memphis Grizzlies opted not to move Ja Morant ahead of this week’s trade deadline, but league expectations remain that the star guard is unlikely to remain with the franchise long term.
Memphis is planning to revisit Morant trade discussions this summer as the organization continues to lean fully into a rebuild.
League sources indicated the Grizzlies were seeking a return centered on young players and multiple first-round picks in any Morant deal.
Those proposals never came together before the deadline, with reports noting that several teams instead approached Memphis about attaching draft compensation to move off Morant’s contract.
Morant is owed $87 million fully guaranteed over the next two seasons with no team or player options remaining. Memphis is expected to reassess the market during the offseason to identify teams in need of a point guard willing to meet their price.
The Grizzlies have already begun reshaping the roster. Over the summer, Memphis traded Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic, and earlier this week sent Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz.
Those moves returned multiple first-round picks and young talent. Finding a new destination for Morant would effectively complete a near-total teardown as Memphis commits to a full rebuild.
