Golden State head coach Steve Kerr addressed the Kristaps Porzingis trade following Thursday’s 101-97 comeback win over the Phoenix Suns at Mortgage Matchup Center.

Kerr first acknowledged the contributions of the players traded to acquire Porzingis. “I want to thank Buddy and JK for what they meant to our locker room. Buddy’s honestly one of the best teammates I’ve ever seen… JK is a really good young guy,” Kerr said.

Reflecting on Jonathan Kuminga’s time with the Warriors, Kerr added, “Most players need the right situation… I’m hopeful he can take what he’s learned through his experience, the ups and the downs, and transfer that to his next opportunity.”

On Porzingis’ fit, Kerr emphasized the combination the team has been seeking for years. “He’s a legitimate three-point shooter, rim protector. Tough to find that combination in one player… The biggest thing is his health. We wouldn’t have made the trade if we didn’t think he could be healthy and consistent.”

Kerr compared Porzingis to Quinten Post, noting the difference in experience. “Kristaps is much more established, older, more experienced… We’re excited to get him.”

Asked about potential fit with Al Horford, Kerr said, “Two guys who are well established as great NBA players and skill sets that fit any winning team… In the coming days we’ll start looking more deeply at how they can play together.”

Kerr also reflected on lessons from past decisions. “I was the GM here once… you learn, you grow… We should have internal discussions organizationally to think about what we need to do going forward, and that should be happening all the time.”

Regarding team morale post-trade deadline, Kerr acknowledged mixed emotions. “There’s always angst… The vibe this morning at shootaround was one of sadness for losing guys we love… It’s one of the weirdest things about this profession.”

On the current roster, Kerr addressed injury updates. “Steph had a workout after shootaround, feeling better for sure… De’Anthony is questionable, he’s going to play.”

Despite roster changes, Kerr expressed confidence in the team’s potential. “We still have a very good team… If we have good health, I think we can make a really good push and be a playoff team. Our goals haven’t changed… We’re trying to find our way, but this is what the season’s about.”

The Warriors improved to 28-24 with the win, erasing a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit thanks to De’Anthony Melton’s late layup and Gui Santos’ fast-break score. Porzingis is expected to join the team in Los Angeles on Friday, though he is unlikely to play against the Lakers on Saturday.
